Get Organized
The first step in creating your new bedroom design is getting organized. The odds are high that your bedroom is a breeding ground for clutter and chaos, so you’ll want to address this before you get started.
This is a great time to go through your closet, dresser, and night stand and purge any items you no longer use or need. You even be able to flip many of them and add the money to your design budget!

New Design With Existing Features
The next step in creating your new dream bedroom is developing a vision for your new design. A common mistake that many people make early on is thinking that everything in your existing design scheme needs to change. The truth is that dream bedroom may not be too different than what you have now; in fact, a few small changes may be all you need to bring life to a boring and drab bedroom.
For example, my wife and I recently redesigned our bedroom without making major wholesale changes. We kept all of our existing furniture, wall decor, and accent pieces, and only changed paint colors and bedding.
If you’re looking to spruce up your bedroom without busting your budget, look to incorporate the useful items you already have into your new design.
Choose Vibrant Paint Colors
If your bedroom feels dull and lifeless, a boring paint color is most likely to blame. The good news is that a few gallons of high-quality paint can transform any space in no time.
While it is always smart to let your personal tastes be your guide, most experts suggest choosing light and bright colors to bring life to your dream bedroom. In particular, white, beige, gray, and blue shades create an inviting space. A well-chosen accent wall color can bring added fun to your new design.
Upgrade Your Lighting
While boring paint colors are the leading cause of a lifeless bedroom, poor lighting is a close second. The good news is that well-placed light fixtures or even brighter light bulbs can bring new life and energy to your dream bedroom.
When choosing bedroom lighting, consider the following basics:
- Lampshades should be about 2/3 the height of your lamp and twice the width of the diameter of the lamp base
- LED-bulbs provide superior lighting and last longer than traditional light bulbs
- Adding overhead lighting to a room will make the room feel larger
- Choose fixtures with high-wattage options; you can always install dimmer switches later on
Choose New Bedding
After you’ve chosen a color palette, you’re ready to pick out new bedding that will complement your new design. Before you settle on a new comforter or duvet, it is important to consider your overall design vision and choose a style that fits well.
The colors, patterns, and styles featured in the bedding you choose will have a major impact on the pillows and accent pieces you can select for your new dream bedroom. Patterned bedding has the advantage of allowing you to incorporate many complimentary colors, while more simplistic options appear more sleek, clean, and modern.
You should also carefully consider your fabric options. High sheen bedding can add energy to a dull room, while softer fabric options can provide much needed contrast. Also, consider the additional maintenance expense that comes with choosing bedding that is dry-clean only.
Less Is Often More
When it comes to rounding out your dream bedroom with accent pieces, it’s wise to choose items carefully and sparingly. By adopting a minimalist mindset, you’ll be sure that the pieces you do choose stand out and have a cohesive impact on your new space.
Repurpose Old Items
If your goal is to create your dream bedroom on a budget, make it your goal to repurpose as many of your old items as possible. It is surprising how just a few simple changes can bring new life and usefulness to the decor items you already own.
For example, when we painted our bedroom we swapped out our existing bedside lamps for the lamps in our guest bedroom. The style of these lamps was a much better fit for our newly-designed space, but there was still one problem: the color of these lamps just didn’t work.
Our solution? I bought a $4 can of metallic gold spray paint and transformed our boring brown lamps into lively accent pieces that perfectly fit our design scheme.
Pillows Pull It All Together
You may not be the type who loves moving a mountain of throw pillows every night before bed -I know I’m not -but a few pillows are the likely key to finishing your new design. They can be a fun and inexpensive way to bring out subtle accent colors and your own touch of personality to your bedroom.
A well-placed accent pillow can provide the final touch needed to fully incorporate accent colors and make your new dream bedroom design pop with new life. Many design experts recommend choosing a unique pattern or alternate shade of a color contained in your duvet to create a focal point.
